Visit to theVestiges du Chateau d'Hyeres

Tonight, following dinner, we took a family walk (something I plan to make part of our daily routine here) through the old part of town in which we're staying and up a rather steep hill toward the ruins of the castle that once capped the medieval village of Hyeres. It was a vigorous post-meal stroll, and we paused along the way to enjoy the sights of our little temporary home.

There was a fire burning in the newer portion of town. We couldn't spot what was on fire, though we could see the huge plume of smoke and hear the sirens from the top of the hill.

Our view of old Hyeres from the top-of-the-hill vantage.

Finn on the castle steps. (He said it looked a lot like Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.)

The kids playing at the top of the castle ruins grounds.

The castle is now a clearly popular site for walkers. We saw several cars in the parking lot at the base of the area, and met many people on our way up the trail into the ruins--some who had even been picnicking there!

On our walk to the castle, Nathan spotted this famous staircase.

As I noted yesterday, I love the use of color on the homes here -- on the exterior walls, the shutters, the doorways. It's all bright and cheerful, and each home is individual.

Finn, looking down on this alley through a fence from above, spotted the collection of purple blossoms in the gutter and said, "Mom! You have to take a picture of that!"

Nathan had the unwieldy task of pushing the stroller up the very steep rues toward the castle!

This sign indicates the Rue d'Edith Wharton. :)

Here, a French mystery: the shop dedicated entirely to canned sardines of every seasoning and sort.

I'll post more on the lovely details I'm noticing everywhere here, but couldn't help spotting these two fountains on our walk today, one in front of a gelato shop, the other in front of the church in the square just below our apartment.

The walk over, Finn and his tired little string-bean legs paused to rest at our front door before climbing up to the third floor for a little Curious George and banana custard before bed.
